Learning to crochet can feel quite frustrating.
The most common comments I hear are, “I can only chain.” and “I tried, but could never get the hang of it and quit.”
So I’ve developed this method to teach you how to crochet; so you aren’t saying, “I tried, but couldn’t”.
Once you learn a couple steps, crochet can be a great stress reliever.
Over time, you’ll be able to crochet while watching the kids recitals, games or even during movie night!
It’s the perfect thing to keep your hands moving, while paying attention to something else.
Step 1
First, take a trip to the store.
You will need a few items to begin.
Here’s your shopping list:
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn, Hobby Lobby I love this yarn or Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn (you only need one of these). This is all #4 worsted weight yarn, and the most popular from these brands. I usually recommend this yarn to start, because of its wide variety of colors and costs very little. It’s also easiest to work with. This yarn is the acrylic fiber, so if you’d like a different fiber just look around.
- I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook (Boye, Clover or Susan Bates are common brands). I usually recommend this size for beginners. It’s great for the size yarn I recommended and easier to work with.
- Embroidery scissors to cut the yarn. You will need to cut the yarn when your finished with your project.
- A tapestry needle. It should have a large hole to feed the yarn through. This needle is needed to weave in your yarn ends; to finish your project.
Most large craft stores have a 40% off coupon, so check online to save a few dollars.
Step 2
The foundation chain (AKA, chain or CH), is the first thing every crocheter learns to make.
The chain is so important, because it’s how you start every project; whether you are making a row or a circle.
And for our left handers
If you can get past the chain, you have already made it farther than most!
Congratulations!!
Step 3
Now that you’ve learned how to make a chain, you are about to go into unknown territory for most people, that have tried crochet.
I would call that quite an accomplishment!
Right now, we are going to learn how to make the single crochet (AKA, SC).
With the single crochet, you will be able to make wash clothes, scarves, hats, the daunting task of a blanket, or even baskets and bags.
And for our left handers
Step 4
Now that you have learned the basic skills of crochet, I’m going to show you how to make a project.
Today we are going to make a simple square.
They are very simple and easy to make in a short amount of time.
If you make enough of these squares, you can hand stitch them together, and make a blanket or scarf.
And for our left handers
Now what???
Believe it or not, you can now make a lot of my patterns with the skills I’ve shown you above.
I always try to keep my patterns simple and easy.
It’s so easy to get carried away with a bunch of stitches and techniques.
And a lot of projects look beautiful that way, but if that’s not your style than you might find what you’re looking for here.
Now that, that’s all cleared up, you’ve just begun to scratch the surface of crochet.
There are so many things you can learn and make.
But to get a good head start, here are a few more beginner stitches and techniques you could learn.
