I haven’t heard of the half double crochet (aka hdc) being used much. The single crochet is used when you need a lot of structure. And the double crochet is used when you just want to finish the project fast. Other than that, I’ve heard of the half being used in between when increasing the incline or decline. That is since the half double crochet stitch is in between a single crochet and a double crochet.
For some reason, I don’t really remember learning this stitch. I think I was sitting on my bed with a crochet hook, yarn and basic stitch book. ACC, it’s becoming clearer now. It was a long time ago, but I gotta admit, it was a nightmare. Learning from pictures in a book with lingo I didn’t understand… Well, I got a handful of headaches trying to figure it out. OFC, I wasn’t smart enough to look on YouTube for a little help back then lol. Thank goodness I did figure it out, and I’m smarter now to make things a bit easier for you!
Reasons to learn the half double crochet stitch…
- It is help moving from a single crochet to a double crochet.
- It’s a nice balance between a more structured stitch and fast stitch.
- It’s great to learn after the chain and single crochet!
- It gives a pretty cool look on the backside.

And for lefty’s:
Half Double Crochet Photo Tutorial (Sorry the photos are a bit blurry):
First, make some chain. I made 7 chain stitches.
Second, take the yarn over the crochet hook.
Then, insert the crochet hook into the 3rd chain from the crochet hook.
Again, take the yarn over the crochet hook.
Next, take the crochet hook back through the stitch.
Then, take the yarn over the crochet hook yet again.
Finally, take the crochet hook through all loops on the crochet hook (3 loops).
Woohoo! You made a half double crochet! Continue making half double crochets across.
