I remember when I first decided I wanted to start knitting. The thought of figuring out the difference between knitting needles was really scary. I had no idea what they would be like figuring out compared to crochet hooks, but it turns out they are just like them! They have the different sizes, and materials. Pretty much the same as crochet hooks. I think the only difference is what you use them for. For example, straight needles, circular needles, double pointed needles and cable needles.

Really, I’ve come to love knitting needles more than crochet hooks. I’m not really sure why, but I have. They have actually become easier to work with than hooks surprisingly and I would have never guessed that a year ago.
Here is a video if you prefer not to read through everything:
Straight Needles
These are straight knitting needles. They are 9″ long needles that are made of bamboo. I do have to say, they are my second favorite because they are clover and they would be my first favorite if it weren’t for another pair. I like bamboo so much because it’s hard to snap bamboo which makes them quality. Plus, they don’t get freezing in the winter when taking a project on the go. I use the straight needles for things like blankets, scarves, or towels.
More on Straight Knitting Needles
These are just like the pair of knitting needles above, straight bamboo clover, but 13″ long. I use the straight needles for things like blankets, scarves, or towels.
These are metal knitting needles. I’m not a huge fan of metal ones, because they can get cold on the go due to the material. Other than that, they are perfectly fine. I use the straight needles for things like blankets, scarves, or towels.
Then we get to the plastic knitting needles. You probably won’t find as many plastic ones. I’m not sure why, but the reason I don’t lean toward these are because of the material snapping easier. Other than that, they are perfectly fine. I use the straight needles for things like blankets, scarves, or towels.
Okay, we’ve come to my all time fave! I love these interchangeable knitting needles, because I can change them to whatever I want. Let me explain, the needle and cord can come apart, and the other end can have an extension, end cap or another needle. You’re probably starting to get it. I can make these needles into anything I need. Plus, they are the bamboo clover needles that I love! For these, I used a needle size I needed, cap and cord size I needed. I use the straight needles for things like blankets, scarves, or towels.
Circular Needles
This is just like the knitting needles above. But they are circular knitting needles. For this I used, 2 knitting needles in the size I needed and the size cord that I needed. I use these circular needles for cowls, hats, or anything in the round. I also use them for straight projects if you don’t join the project.
Let’s see! These are regular circular knitting needles. They come in a set needle and cord size. The difference is they are made out of wood and Knitters Pride brand. I use these circular needles for cowls, hats, or anything in the round. I also use them for straight projects if you don’t join the project.
Double Pointed Needles
These knitting needles might look a big scary, because they are double pointed, or you could call them double ended. They are bamboo, clover and usually come in packs of 4 or 6 needles. I used these for really small circles, like tops of hats, socks, sleeves.
Bonus: Cable Needles
Last but not least, these are cable knitting needles. As you can guess, they are used for cables and can be very handy and are really clover U-shaped stitch holders. As you can tell by the name, it’s technically not a knitting needle, but I kinda think of it as one, so I threw it in.
